Before I went overseas, I went to my nearest supermarket and perused the cosmetics section. I have this fascination with long-lasting lipsticks, because for the past god knows how many years, I’ve been using lipsticks and then applying a lipstick lock on them (usually Rimmel’s Lipstick Lock). And it’s difficult and annoying and it stings. So when long-lasting lipsticks became an all-in-one thing, I jumped at the opportunity to try them all (kind of like catching all the Pokémon…but I digress).
I managed to find four different brands in the supermarket: Rimmel, Klara, Maybelline and Covergirl. All of them were very different, ranging from having a double applicator to a single applicator, glossy to matte. And I tried them. I tried them all. And I made sure to do what I would usually do in a day in order to really test them. I ate, I drank, I showered, I kissed, I slept. And here are the results.
Rimmel Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour — AUD17.95
With a double-ended applicator, this 2-in-1 lipstick and sealer is super easy to apply and doesn’t take up too much room compared to a separate lipstick and sealer. It worked in less than five minutes. The only residue you get is a thin, almost-invisible layer from the sealer. Two hours later, and it wouldn’t even come off with a makeup wipe. It took quite a few goes and a bit of a scrub, however that just goes to show how well it works! The only bad thing about it is that it can be a bit too glossy because of the sealer, but one or two blots on a tissue, and it should turn towards being a bit more matte. 9/10
KLARA Kiss Proof Lips — AUD19.00
A 24-hour long-lasting lipstick! This one is matte, and is a single-applicator type, so no need to put on a sealer. The applicator itself is insanely good and malleable, so it’s easy to spread on. After merely five minutes, it had completely set, with no signs of anything smearing. After two hours, dinner and drinks, the lipstick had not smudged or smeared one bit. Definitely recommend, especially since it’s a single applicator and not glossy at all. The only bad thing about it is that it can tend to peel off…but only after several hours. 8/10
Maybelline Superstay 24 2-Step Color — AUD11.20
Like the Rimmel Provocalips, this is a 2-in-1 lipstick and sealer. The applicator is wonderful and easy to use, but the 24-hour promise just isn’t there. After only five minutes on, it had smudged. After two hours, it was still smudging. It was very easy to take off, so the only good thing about it was the applicator. It was also very sticky and glossy. 5/10
Covergirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor — AUD10.47
A separate applicator and lipstick makes it a bit annoying to carry this one around, as it means you need to search for both in your bag while out. Once again, like the Maybelline Superstay, this was more like Neverstay. It slid off, and was a bit of a disappointment. It was also very easy to wipe off. 3/10
Needless to say, I’ve been using the Rimmel one the most often out of the four. It’s easy, the applicator works well, and once the extra gloss is gone, there’s no mess or anything. Seriously, though, I’ve had to freaking bite the stuff off my lips to get it off, so be careful!
