My boyfriend and I have been together for five years, and each year there’s an almost battle as to who will buy The Best Anniversary Gift Ever.
For our first year together, I wrote him 365 reasons why I love him, and put the notes into a jar named “Charlotte’s Love For Robbie Jar”. Five years on, and he’s still got the jar. He’s told me he often goes and reads one, just to remember why I love him. The idea was this: He gets to open one paper a day for one year. Each piece of paper either had a reason why I loved him, or excerpts from an actual conversation we had had over MSN or Facebook chat (yes, we used MSN in high school).
For our fifth anniversary, I organised the extraordinary: 12 dates over the course of 12 months, starting from the month of our anniversary (February).
What you’ll need:
- 12 yellow A4 envelopes
- 12 pieces of coloured A4 paper
- Pens
- Calendar
- Ideas
The last point is the hardest. I researched for weeks until I had compiled a list of things to do. As it’s only June, I can only share with you what we’ve done thus far:
February: We drove to Bilpin, NSW to go apple picking. It was something neither of us had ever done. It’s fascinating to actually see apples on trees and pick them off the trees.
March: Two tickets to Moonlight Cinema, Sydney. You can watch a movie in the middle of Centennial Park while sitting on the grass and eating takeaway. Super romantic.
April: Two tickets to the opening night of Sydney Comedy Festival. Laughing at seriously amazing comedians is probably one of the best date ideas ever.
May: A weekend away in Robertson, NSW. We stayed with a lovely couple using Airbnb, and had a relaxing time watching waterfalls, eating ourselves silly, and trying not to look at work emails.
June: Next weekend we’ll be going to the Southern Highlands, NSW to attend the Winter Wine Festival. $10 gets you entry to all cellar doors in the region.
As I said, we’re only up to June, and I know he sometimes looks at my blog, so I can’t give too much away. I will, however, add to this post every month with the new and exciting thing we are doing for that date.
It’s a pretty great gift, and I’m still surprised each month when he opens the envelope, as I’ve maybe perhaps absolutely forgotten some of the dates I’ve planned!
If you’re super interested in this idea, you can follow the dates by looking up #12monthsofRobbie on Instagram!
Really loved this; so romantic! Such a great idea 🙂

Thanks! So worth it, and means we get to enjoy spending time together at least once a month doing something interesting and exciting!!
It’s the gift that keeps on giving. Such a wonderful, meaningful and inspiring idea. Nice work!
Thanks Mel! Love how it means we get to set aside time to do something fun each month even though we’re crazy busy with work!
This is gorgeous!I did the 365 reasons I love you as well, but because we’re always on the road, I chose to do it via email. I wrote down 365 reasons and then scheduled one email for each day (using Boomerang). He loved it! 🙂
I really like your 12 dates idea. We’re celebrating 5 years this year as well and I think I’m going to try to implement it somehow as well.
Your man is lucky to have you! xx
I love your email idea! I should do that too (but just for fun).
I think if you’re already travelling overseas and moving about a lot, perhaps you could use the 12 dates idea as a way to slow down, stop, sit with each other, and do something you wouldn’t usually do.
Thanks for the huge compliment, and good luck with the 5th anniversary gift!!
